The Critical Role of Retrieval Practice

The critical role of retrieval practice in long-term retention
Henry L. Roediger III and Andrew C. Butler

Washington University have produced another research article that scientifically proves that online assessments should be used as a learning tool rather than just a knowledge measurement instrument. This journal demonstrates that providing feedback as part of a multichoice assessment can have a tremendous impact on learning and long term memory retention for a candidate.

This Journal explains that typically, when faced with an assessment in any walk of life - education, work and personal - that people will study in the build-up to and then sit the assessment. These tests are then used to measure a level of understanding. Henry L. Roediger states that this journal turns this conventional wisdom ‘on its head’

Roediger and Butler’s study finds that during tests retrieval practise occurs (this is the mind pulling information from a previous experience i.e. studying) this process strengthens our memory and reinforces what we know, leading to greater learning and long term retention when compared to simply studying. Therefore the use of assessments as part of a learning process over repetitive study sees a candidate go through the retrieval process many times in the build-up to a final exam.

This journal is full of examples, graphs and recommendations and definitely worth a read for anyone heading up their organisations training, learning & development.
